Pirate Warriors embraces the combat stylings of the Dynasty Warriors series, pitting series protagonist Monkey and a number of other playable characters against wave upon wave of enemies; the playable demo Namco had on-hand showed off the impressive number of enemies the game can display at any given time. Though the Dynasty Warriors series is known for its massive number of on-screen foes, Pirate Warriors does this with the anime stylings of series creator Eiichiro Oda, featuring some of the most over-the-top combat sequences I’ve seen in a long time.

“One Piece” is a household name in Japan, where the mangas and anime series are among the most popular series of all time. The series follows Monkey D. Luffy, a seafaring pirate in search of treasure on the high seas, who possesses the strange ability to stretch his limbs to cartoonish lengths after eating a mysterious fruit.

While only a handful of the games created in the One Piece universe have seen releases Stateside, the release of PS3-exclusive One Piece: Pirate Warriors sees the series return to the US. I recently went hands-on with a Japanese build of the game at Namco Bandai’s Gamers Day, checking out Pirate Warriors’ brawler-based gameplay and over-the-top anime antics.

It’s easy to get the hang of combat right away, combining light and strong attacks into combo strings to take down multiple enemies at once. Monkey’s ability to stretch his limbs to ridiculous length allows him to strike groups from across the screen. Monkey also possesses the ability to perform mega attacks, which are available once a charge bar at the top of the screen fills up as he defeats enemies. These attacks are totally off-the-wall, and involve brief anime-style cutscenes while Monkey inflicts massive amounts of pain on his helpless foes.

The story of One Piece: Pirate Warriors closely follows both the anime and manga series, though it is unable to cover all plot points in a series that spans fifteen years and over five hundred episodes. The chief protagonist is Monkey D. Luffy, the young man who is granted extraordinary powers after eating the demon Gum-Gum Fruit. These powers allow him to stretch, flail and bend his limbs far and wide, well beyond anything nature would have intended a human being to do. As a young rascal, he forms the Straw Hat Pirates, a motley crew of outlaws that set out to recover the One Piece treasure. This is an item that belonged to the world’s greatest pirate, and acts as sole motivation for Luffy and his crew.

Video games based on movies and television shows are dubious affairs at the best of times, and games based on anime and manga are certainly not immune to controversy. Popular series like Naruto, Fist of the North Star and Gundam have all seen game releases over the years, and they have drawn very polarized reactions from series fan. I fully expect that One Piece: Pirate Warriors will have the same effect. Based on a long-running anime and manga series, developers Temco Koei and publishers Namco Bandai released this game in Japan back in March 2012 to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the franchise. A western release has finally come to fruition as a downloadable title on the Playstation Network, and if you’re a fan of beat em’ ups, this is one game that is definitely worth checking out.

Let me start this review with a disclaimer of sorts; I had never seen the One Piece anime series or read any of the manga prior to playing One Piece: Pirate Warriors. I have been aware of it and intrigued by the unique plot and setting, but it never crossed my radar. However, not being familiar with the source material actually puts me in a good position, since I can review and assess the game objectively. In my experience, fanfare or derision can cloud a persons judgement when it comes to critically analysing it as a game. Accordingly, this is not a review that will preach to the choir of One Piece fans, nor will it take the side of series detractors. This is strictly a review of how One Piece: Pirate Warriors plays as a game.

King of Pirate is like a retelling of the One Piece story. YES, it is exactly how the manga / anime started (albet at around 2nd or 3rd episode?). For those who doesn’t know, the gist is that Luffy wants to be the pirate king, and along the way he meets and recruits members of his team, etc etc. Ok. I admit, I’m not really sure about my One Piece lore, but I can imagine that those who are reading this article about One Piece knows exactly what One Piece and its story is.

The story is presented in episodic format, and it seems that it follows the anime story faithfully (with a few mistranslations here and there). While I haven’t really went so far in the game, it looks like since this is based on the anime, the game will continue. In each episode, a brief cutscene will appear presenting the episode. There are no animations, but the characters are represented with pictures, and their thoughts and words represented with thought / speech ballons. Still Ok.In story mode, you are presented with a map. You have to “touch” Luffy for him to walk in the map. After “touching” Luffy (hehe) a couple of times, you will run into a battle with someone (Battles are always accompanied by a cutscene that progresses the story of that episode).

Battle System
Now get this: Battles are automatic. You don’t need to press a virtual button to attack or Luffy’s head to attack someone. Everything is happening automatically. Even if you get some party members, they will attack that way, with no specific enemy to pinpoint.Of course there is something you can touch during battles – the skills. Each member of your team has a certain gauge that when maxed out, you can touch it to unleash whatever power they have.
